Now in its second edition, this graohic look at the history of graphic design explores its evolution from the 19th century to the present day. I didn’t read the whole book cover to cover, but rather jumped around, and I enjoyed it. The layout of each chapter reflects the unique style of the period it describes, and some illustrations throughout the volume provide a visual record of more than one hundred years of creative achievement in the field.

It covers a host of different materials: Under the influence of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th century, a new era began for design arts. It is definitely a nice referenc I feel that it is probably best to pick and choose the areas that interest you rather than reading it cover-to-cover.
This is a fresh and definitive history of graphic design. Awesome examples of designs.
